Not Simply "You Hit the Car in Front": The True Story Behind a Four‑Car Accident on Tai Po Road

The driver was travelling along Tai Po Road towards Kowloon, maintaining a safe distance, and had already braked to a stop – only to be rear‑ended and pushed into the vehicle ahead. In multi‑vehicle collisions, liability can easily be misattributed. This case study of a 2014 Toyota Spade inspected in Sai Kung in 2021 shows how SILVER SURVEYORS used on‑site evidence, separate documentation of front and rear damage, and a detailed repair cost review to establish exactly who hit whom, what needs repairing, and what compensation is justified – giving the owner a clear basis for dealing with insurers.

The Moment of the Accident: Already Stopped, Yet Still Pushed Forward

At approximately 1:51 pm on 28 January 2021, the owner was driving a 2014 Toyota Spade (license plate xxx) from Fanling to Tsim Sha Tsui. Before departure, he checked the vehicle and found everything normal. He was travelling along Tai Po Road towards Kowloon in the left‑hand lane at about 50–60 km/h, following a private car (xxx) at a distance of roughly 15 metres. When the leading car began to slow down, the owner also slowed down; then the leading car braked hard to a stop, and the owner braked hard as well. After coming to a halt, his front bumper was still about 4 metres behind the rear of the leading car – a distance that should have allowed him to stop safely.

The problem came from behind: while the owner was braking, his car was struck at the rear by the front of another vehicle (xxx). Despite keeping the brake pedal fully depressed, the force of the impact pushed his car forward into the rear of car xxx. The scene was ultimately identified as a four‑vehicle chain collision near lamp post number EB3352A on the New Territories Circular Road / Tai Po Road area. The owner got out, saw damage to both the front and rear of his car, reported the incident to the police, and fortunately sustained no injuries.

Many car owners in this situation feel unfairly treated: "I had already stopped – why am I being blamed for hitting the car in front?" If the insurer simply looks at the fact that "your car hit the car ahead", liability can easily be misallocated. The role of an independent survey is to first establish the correct sequence of events.

On‑Site Inspection: Separate Front and Rear Damage to Determine Who Pushed Whom

On 27 February 2021, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, a SILVER SURVEYORS inspector attended the vehicle at Hong Tsuen Road, Sai Kung (recorded as DD215, Lot SX814; the repair quotation address shows DD215, Lot 81) for an independent inspection. Without presuming liability, we categorised the damage based on physical evidence:

Front damage: multiple scratches, chips, and deformation to the front bumper; similar damage to the bonnet panel. Consistent with the vehicle being pushed forward into the rear of car xxx – a secondary impact.

Rear damage: multiple scratches, chips, and deformation to the rear bumper; consistent with the primary impact from the front of vehicle xxx. Impact height and position matched.

Exhaust system: damage to the exhaust muffler and rubber mounting brackets, likely caused by the rear impact forcing the underbody upward or causing the exhaust to strike the ground.

Other checks: vehicle registration document verified – 2014 Toyota Spade, engine capacity 1,496 cc, license plate xxx, and client details confirmed to avoid mix‑ups with prior damage or incorrect vehicle identification.

The key is not simply taking photos of both ends; it is separating the two causal sequences – "rear impact first" and "subsequent front impact" – so that liability allocation, claims, and any counter‑claim against the third party can be properly supported.

Repair Cost Review: HK$78,862 Quotation Examined Against Site Evidence

The owner provided a repair quotation from a garage (Job ref. A2787, contact Mr Tang Tsz Chung Roy). Items included: front bumper, upper and lower grilles, front number plate, front reinforcement slam bar, bonnet panel, exhaust muffler, exhaust rubber mounts, rear bumper, rear reinforcement slam bar, spare tyre housing metal frame, tailgate door lock, tailgate rubber seal, left tail light, paint and materials, and panel beating labour – totalling HK$78,862.

We reviewed each line item against the site photographs and the logical sequence of impacts:

Front bumper, grilles, front reinforcement bar, bonnet, and related front lighting items → retained as they correspond to the secondary impact (being pushed into car xxx).

Rear bumper, rear reinforcement bar, spare tyre housing, tailgate lock, tailgate rubber seal, exhaust muffler and mounts → retained as they correspond to the primary rear impact (hit by vehicle xxx).

Paint and panel beating labour were assessed based on the actual damaged areas and dismantling/refitting times; pre‑existing scratches or general wear were excluded from the claim.

Final conclusion: the reasonable recoverable repair cost is HK$78,862. The owner may use this figure when submitting a claim to his insurer for the actual repair.

The value of this review: the insurer sees an independent report that clearly separates front and rear damage according to different responsible parties; the owner also avoids worrying that the garage quote is inflated or that the insurer will unreasonably reduce the payout.

Why Multi‑Vehicle Pile‑Ups Especially Need an Independent Survey

Chain collisions commonly involve three pitfalls:

Misattribution of liability: the insurer may simply conclude "you hit the car in front = following too close", ignoring the rear‑end push.

Mixing old and new damage: pre‑existing scratches or previous repairs may be wrongly included in the claim.

Over‑broad repair scopes: panel beating, painting, and disassembly may be quoted for the whole vehicle rather than limited to the impacted areas.

SILVER SURVEYORS acts as an independent third party: measuring on site, photographing front and rear separately with reference numbers, verifying the registration document and quotation, and stating in writing which damage corresponds to which impact. If further negotiation or dispute arises, we can also provide third‑party liability evidence compilation, repair cost arbitration, total loss / residual value assessment, and expert witness services.

Key Takeaways for Car Owners

In a chain collision, do not rush to admit "I hit the car in front". First note the licence plate of the vehicle behind you, your stopping distance, and whether you had already come to a complete stop before being hit.

Preserve the lamp post / road section number, dashcam footage, vehicle registration document, and multiple angle photos of the scene.

Have the garage quotation reviewed by an independent surveyor before signing. Separately listing front and rear damage helps the insurer allocate liability correctly.

Roads such as Tai Po Road, the Fanling–Kowloon route, and Sai Kung village roads each present different risk profiles. Maintain extra following distance on long journeys, and if a vehicle behind is tailgating at high speed, give way early and record the evidence.
